el pariente (pah-ree-ehn'-teh)

noun ( relative )

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Siempre comparto las Navidades con mis parientes más cercanos.

I always spend Christmas with my closest relatives.

2. Ella es pariente política del actor de la telenovela.

She is the soap opera actor's in-law.

En mis relaciones con mis parientes, se podría decir que todo es relativo.

In my relations with my family members, you could say everything is relative.

It is good to have a big family with lots of relatives and also good friends who you can rely on, who always care for one another and let you know how important you are. By contrast, some people live alone but they usualy have good friends. I hope that every person has at least a couple of great friend.

Es bueno tener una famila grande con muchos parientes y también buenos amigos en quienes poder confiar, que siempre cuidan los unos de los otros y te dejan saber cuán importante eres. Por el contrario, algunas personas viven solas pero usualmente tienen buenos amigos. Espero que cada persona tenga al menos un par de buenos amigos.

A veces mis parientes me dan tanta vergüenza, pero, a pesar de eso, los quiero.

Sometimes my relatives embarrass me a lot, but I love them anyway.

Podemos tener diferencias, pero tenemos muchas más similitudes que diferencias. Somos parientes, porque todos nosotros provenimos del mismo árbol, el Árbol de la Esperanza.

We may have differences, but we have many more similarities than differences. We are relatives because we all stem from the same tree, the Tree of Hope.

Peoples and families are not evil. Only individuals are evil. You can't punish his relatives for his sins./ Los pueblos y las familias no son malos. Sólo los individuos son malos. No podéis castigar a sus parientes por sus pecados.

It only takes one bad relative to spoil an entire family tree.

Toma solo un pariente malo para arruinar un árbol genealógico entero.

Tengo una familia muy grande y algunos de mis parientes son desconocidos para mi. En una ocasión tuve una cita con una chica que acababa de conocer en la ciudad de donde es originario mi padre, la invité a una de esas fiestas familiares y ahí en esa fiesta mi padre me presentó a un "tío nuevo" era uno de sus primos en segundo grado que resultó ser el padre de la chica. Fue my vergonzoso.

I have a big family and some of my relatives are completely unknown to me. Once I had a date with a girl that I just met in my father's hometown. I invited her to a family party. At the party, my father introduced me to a "new uncle" one of his second cousins and he was my date's father. It was embarrassing.

Vi muchos de mis parientes la semana pasada porque fui al funeral de mi tía. [Estaba triste pero tiene noventa y dos años y tenía una vida feliz.]

Second sentence corrected by caefuego: Fue algo triste, pero ella tenía 92 años y tuvo una vida feliz

I saw many of my relatives last week because I went to the funeral of my aunt. It was sad but she was ninety-two and she had a happy life.
