Hola! Tenemos una tarea en nuestra clase de español y yo no encontro una respuesta. (We have an assignment in our Spanish class and I can't find an answer.) Nosotros estudiamos sobre "expresar sentimientos (Our topic is about "expresar sentimientos")

Why do we have to use imperfect subjunctive in the first sentence and preterito perfecto in the second one? Muchas Gracias! Feel free to correct my errors.=)

Hola! Tenemos una tarea en nuestra clase de español y yo no encontro una respuesta. (We have an assignment in our Spanish class and I can't find an answer.) Nosotros estudiamos sobre "expresar sentimientos (Our topic is about "expresar sentimientos") ( This should be – no puedo encontrar una respuesta…I can’ find an answer) 1.Es una lastima que Susana DEJARA los estudios el mes pasado. Con lo inteligente que es... In this sentences…you are expressing and present emotion about a past. This past action has to be in the imperfect subjunctive. DEJARA (It’s a pitty that Susan left the studies last month…the actions from Susan took place last month…you are expressing your sorrow now) 2.Me da mucha pena que Enrique HAYA DEJADO este trabajo.Con lo bien que me llevaba con él... It hurts me that Enrique has left this job. In this sentence you are expressing sorrow about a past action, but as though it just took place. Even though his action took place in the past…its effect is currently hurting you. Also remember that HAS denotes current. Since HAS denotes current than the subjunctive has to be current) Haya dejado = has presently left. Hope all of this has helped you. ?

Just think of the present subjunctive conjugations of haber as present current reflections of the past participle. :) - viejito, Jul 27, 2012
