Written Translation Exercise - "Birds and Noise"

votes

Here is an exercise to translate the following English paragraph into Spanish. Anyone is welcome to participate. Do your best to translate it, then post your answer. Even if you can't do all of it, post your attempt. You can't really learn a new language if you don't make mistakes. Keep in mind that since others may have already posted an answer, you could look at their answers first... but... Where's the fun in that?

He aquí un ejercicio de traducción. Todos están invitados a participar. Haz todo lo posible por traducir este párrafo, y luego pon tu respuesta. Inténtalo, aún si no entiendas todo. No se puede aprender algo nuevo si no te equivoques. Tenga presente que haya otros que ya habrán puesto una respuesta. Entonces, quiza quieras ver estas primero... pero... **¿Será eso divertido **de verdad?***

(If you're curious how these exercise go, here are links to some exercises I posted long ago: Sp to Eng - Eng to Sp - Eng to Sp, Beginner I would appreciate any comments and suggestions!)

Birds and Noise

Some birds go to great lengths to make themselves heard over city clamor. While urban noise may be a nuisance for humans, it can be a question of life and death for birds, since males sing to attract mates and demarcate their territory. Because city noise is louder at low frequencies, certain birds make their songs more audible by singing at night or by raising their volume or pitch. What is more, this adaptability is not limited to urban birds. Those living near waterfalls and river torrents also sing at higher frequencies.

What a great idea! I'm going to have a bash without a dictionary, and then see what I can do to make it less clunky (So far, it's very clunky!) - unless that's cheating? - Enderby, Jul 23, 2012
Not using a dictionary is N O T cheating. :-) And your idea about making it less clunky is really the point. Make the ideas sound natural in English. Go for it! - chaparrito, Jul 23, 2012

Thanks to all who offered suggestions and corrections, I'll try again.

NOTE. The things that stumped me the most were the following: 1) "make themselves heard" in 1st sentence. Why not se hacen escuchar? 2) "by singing" or "by raising" in the 3rd sentence. I toyed with the idea of "por cantar" & "por incrementar" or "al cantar" & "al incrementar," or for that matter, "por subir" (instead of "incrementar") or "al subir." I skipped the dilemma by using "cantando" and "incrementando," which I realize changed the text a little.

Thanks again. Ron Sailon

- irnalonso, Jul 26, 2012

Great job, you two! smile I picked RonSailon's answer as the best since he came back and tried again. Nice job! Here's my answer, followed by a few learning points.

Keep in mind the difference between these two verbs. They may be related, but they are different, just like there is a difference between the English verbs 'Hear' and 'Listen'. The phrase in the exercise "make themselves heard" needs the verb "Oír" to best translate the idea expressed.

Al Cantar vs Cantando

RonSailon asked about this, and he made the correct choice. The phrase in the exercise was "by singing at night..." When English uses "by" followed by a verb, the most common translation you will see and hear is the gerund form of the verb. For example:

"How can you make friends at school? One way is by taking the initiative to greet new students."

"¿Cómo puedes hacer amigos en la escuela? Una manera es tomando la iniciativa en saludar a los nuevos alumnos."

"The dog survived by eating food scraps in the street."

"El perro sobrevivió comiendo desperdicios en la calle."

What is more...

There are various ways to translate this transitional phrase. "Además" is one. "Es más" is another. But "Que es más" is just slightly incomplete. It needs to be "Lo que es más".

Don't be too literal

One last tip is to translate ideas rather than words. The expression "go to great lengths" doesn't work well in Spanish when we focus on the word "length". Instead think of the idea behind that expression and translate that.

Keep up the great work! grin

JoyceM, Here's your post below with some key mistakes highlighted. (Bold is incorrect, italics means something is missing or unclear, and both is both.)

¡Muy bien hecho! ¿Cómo te sientes después de haber traducido tanto? Bien, ¿no? Keep up the great work. There is still time if you want to review your post and make corrections. If you decide to do so, create an additional post so you can be rewarded for your additional effort. grin
