Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. José montó un alambre de púas alrededor de su casa para espantar a los ladrones.

José put up barbed wire around his house to scare away thieves.

2. La cerca de alambre se usa para proteger jardines de los herbívoros.

A wire fence is used to protect gardens from herbivores.

Idioms:

1. estar hecho un alambre

to be as thin as a rake

Hace muchísimos años tuvimos dos caballos. Los guardamos en un campo pequeño cercano. Hubimos de Instalar barreras de alambre electrificado para contenerlos dentro.

Many years ago we owned two horses. We kept them in a small nearby field. We had to install an electrified fence to contain them in the field.

Nowadays, there aren't any birds on the wires. They all follow the fashion and use wireless.

Gracias a Carlos:

Actualmente, no hay ningunos pájaros en los alambres. Todos siguen la moda y utilizan la red inalámbrica.

How can birds sit on electrical wires and not get electrocuted ?

¿Cómo las aves pueden sentarse en los alambres de electricidad,y no consigue electrocutado ? enter image description here

it is to do with resistance - it is easier for the electricity to go along the wire than through the body of the bird. - jennysk, Jul 17, 2012

Jaja, that's a good one Joyce, I wish I'd thought of that. jejejeje - rac1, Jul 17, 2012
Believe me it is an incredible problem , please watch the video in Spanish , it is good practice and very informative . - ray76, Jul 17, 2012
Un plaga de conejos en España también. Yo no sabía. - ray76, Jul 17, 2012
Wow, that's incredible. - rac1, Jul 17, 2012
In England they get mixomatosis every few years..It's horrible but keeps numbers down. - annierats, Jul 17, 2012
Thanks for the video. I didn't know this was such a problem either, usually they are a tapas, in Spain.. - annierats, Jul 17, 2012
The Spanish video is great exercise for us learning Spanish , they speak slow enough to follow . - ray76, Jul 17, 2012
It is because Australia once imported huge quantities of rabbitsa without having natural predators. So .... indeed they had a large surplus of rabbits not long thereafter. Their solution was to come up with myx- and vhs-diseases. - mcl020, Jul 17, 2012
Houserabbit owners in Australia are forbidden to give their rabbits preventive shots against these deadly diseases. - mcl020, Jul 17, 2012
Another expample of how men and nature don't go along that well ;-(((( - mcl020, Jul 17, 2012
Mc1020 , they only imported " ONE PAIR of Rabbits , and guess who did that and why ? and guess who imported the Fox also. - ray76, Jul 17, 2012
Mixamatosis no longer works it ended years ago , they now use the calisi virus , which has also lost its zing they are almost indestructible. - ray76, Jul 17, 2012
Mc1020 ,those so called deadly diseases are no longer working , they are transmitted by mosquitos , so pet Rabbits are not in danger , very rare for them to get infected . - ray76, Jul 17, 2012
Ay Ray ..... I wish that was true .... but over here each year 80% of the populations succumb from it. - mcl020, Jul 17, 2012
And that number is already better than some years ago. - mcl020, Jul 17, 2012
I will watch it, Ray. - iana01, Jul 17, 2012
MC 1020, maybe because here pet Rabbits are not that popular . - ray76, Jul 18, 2012

Conejos de casa no debería pasar sus vidas enteras encerradas en jaulas de alambre o plástico. En una casa a prueba de conejos son mascotas fantásticas, secas, juguetones, sociales y adorables.

House rabbits should not spend their whole lives locked up in cages of wire or plastic. In a bunnyproof house they make fantastic, housetrained, playful, social and lovable pets.

You can train them like you would a dog? - rac1, Jul 17, 2012
Bien dicho. - annierats, Jul 17, 2012
Yes, you could do that. But where dogs prefer to be 'bossed around', rabbits prefer more equal social structures. - mcl020, Jul 17, 2012
If you make the things you want them to do challenging enough, there's no need for training. - mcl020, Jul 17, 2012
And you certainly do not need to housetrain them as that comes natural to them. Only make sure you put a litterbox at their 'chosen' spot (and put some toys and hay in it ;-) ) - mcl020, Jul 17, 2012

Odio el alhambre espinoso. Es la cerca más barata pero hace daños terribles a los caballos , a la fauna y a las aves también.

I hate barbed wire. It's the cheapest fencing but it does terrible damage to horses , to wildlife, and to birds as well..

El alambre de púas se convertía en una carga al ganadero y el ganado que utilizan las tierras de pastoreo.

Barbed wire became a burden to the cattleman and cattle who used the open range.
