I'm pretty sure that a literal translation would not work - "en vacione" (The translator gave me "estaba de...". I seem to recall "pasar vacacione" being used - in this case "(yo) pasaba de vacacione". What would be the most common way to express this?

Yes as Marianne says, vacaciones. For some reason on holiday is plural in Spanish, .
