Mainly
The first is she washes her own hair - Ella se lava el pelo
The second she washes the hair of someone else - Ella lava el pelo

Lava is for the verb wash, but only when a "she" do it: ella lava, o ella se lava, - ivanesro92, Jul 18, 2012
