verb ( grade, rate, qualify )

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Los documentos gubernamentales frecuentemente son calificados como alto secreto.

Government documents are often classified as top secret.

2. La maestra se tomó dos horas para calificar los exámenes.

The teacher took two hours to grade the exams.

Cuando era niño mis calificaciones malas se las mostraba a mi madre y las calificaciones buenas a mi padre. Conclusión mi padre era más estricto que mi madre por mucho.

enter image description here

When I was a child I showed the bad grades to my mom and the good ones to my father. Conclusion, my father was more severe than my mother by a lot.

¿Cómo se califica para ser un cantante con éxito? En mi opinión, hay que tener una voz hermosa y humildad.

How do you qualify to be a successful singer? In my opinion, you have to have a beautiful voice and humility.

This is beautiful!

Many young people spend their whole life training to qualify for the Olympics and never even make it to the games.

Muchas personas jovenes pasan toda su vida entrenado para calificar para las Olimpiadas y ni siquiera llegan a los juegos.

De calificar a ser una buena maestra , necesita una fuerte estómago para

beber café barato en la sala de profesores .

To qualify to be a good teacher one needs a strong stomach to drink

cheap coffee in the staff room .

Thank you for the lead in rac1.

Los políticos usan sus registros para calificar sí mismos en las elecciones.

Politicians use their records to qualify themselves in the elections.

Friendship either exists or not. There is nothing in between to be rated as friendship. Friends are those who walk in when others walk out. I hope every person has at least some good friends.

La amisdad existe o no. No hay nada intermedio que se pueda calificar como amisdad. Amigos son aquellos que se acercan a ti cuando los demás se alejan. Espero que cada persona tenga al menos algunos buenos amigos.

No califiques al libro por su cubierta solamente ...... podría haber una fortuna en su interior.

Don’t judge the book only for its cover .... there might be a fortune inside.

Es chistoso que cuando yo comenzaba a tener las clases de español en la universidad, mis calificaciones eran las peores, aunque estaba en el nivel básica de español. Sin embargo, en mi último semestre, cuando las clases avanzadas de español llegaban a su fin, para completar el programa escolar y lograr el título, mis calificaciones todas fueron increíblemente perfectas. Es un poco irónico.

It's funny that when I started taking Spanish classes in college, my grades were the worst, even though I was in the basic levels of Spanish. However, by the time my last semester of advanced Spanish classes came to an end, in order to complete the school program and get the degree, all of my grades were incredibly perfect. It's a little ironic.

gracias caefuego. pero, esto no me comprendo...¿por qué el imperfecto aquí y no el pretérito? Wouldn't the preterit make more sense as translation for "the classes CAME to an end"? - DreSmith3, Jul 14, 2012

Serví en el Cuerpo de Paz desde 1981 hasta 1984. Me colocaron dos meses después de que apliqué pero actualmente es mucho más difícil calificar.

I served in the Peace Corps from 1981-84. They placed me two months after I applied but these days it is much harder to qualify.

With respect, my friend, I think I have it right. Please read this article http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuerpo_de_Paz - mstivers, Jul 15, 2012
I think the confusion lies in the word "corps". Even though it ends in "s" it is a singular noun. - mstivers, Jul 15, 2012

Era bastante difícil calificar para un empréstito de vivienda, pero luego se hizo demasiado fácil, y sabemos lo que occurió después.

It used to be quite difficult to qualify for a housing loan, but then it became too easy and we know what happened then.
