disimular (dee-see-moo-lahr')

verb ( hide, conceal; pretend )

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. No disimules que lo sé todo.

Don't bother pretending, I already know everything.

2. Por más que tratara de disimularlo, todos se dieron cuenta que ella se había hecho cirugía plástica.

As much as she tried to hide it, everyone knew she had had plastic surgery.

Great sentences! - mstivers, Jul 10, 2012
Hola Rac and Cae Just to clarify (looking at some of the sentences below) would it be true to say that disimular means 'to hide' more in the sense of hiding one's emotions or pretending to be something you're not, rather than hiding as in hide and seek? - Kiwi-Girl, Jul 10, 2012
Yes, Kiwi, your explanation is correct. - -cae-, Jul 10, 2012
Muchísimas gracias, Kiwi for this explanation. It is a pity this explanation of the meaning of the word "disimular" was not here earlier. What a pity. Anyway, thanks a lot, Kiwi. :)) - iana01, Jul 11, 2012

Algunas cosas simplemente no es posible disimularlas.

lol... Too good. - -cae-, Jul 10, 2012
Hi, Iana. Well, first at all, according to the picture, a literal translation would be good ("simplemente no se pueden ocultar"), however you may say "no se pueden disimular" or "no es posible disimularlas". You today's post was too funny, btw. =) - -cae-, Jul 10, 2012

Hey Noe, I'm under the impression that disimular is more about hiding emotion than hiding as in hide and seek but see what the experts say :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jul 10, 2012
Kiwi's appreciation is correct. Your sentence means "A los niños les gusta ocultarse". "Disimular" means "Encubrir un pensamiento, sentimiento, intención, etc". - -cae-, Jul 10, 2012
thanks Carlos - puede decir quizas, Kiwi's 'understanding' is correct - Kiwi-Girl, Jul 12, 2012

Disimulaba que la torta estuvo sabrosa, para que su nueva esposa pensaría que fuera iba a pensar que era una buena cocinera.

w/Cae's additional help: Él estaba fingiendo que el pastel esta delicioso, así su nueva esposa pensaría que era una buena cocinera.

He was pretending that the cake was tasty, so that his new wife would think that she was a good cook.

Es una triste realidad que trata de disimular su verdadera apariencia aplicando demasiado maquillaje, como muchas otras chicas.

It's a sad fact that she tries to conceal her true appearance by applying too much makeup, like many other girls.

Gracias Ruiseñor! - rac1, Jul 10, 2012
"No te puedes ocultar toda la vida", but it wouldn't mean the same than "disimular". I am not sure if the idea that you want to express is "hide phisically" (ocultar) or not (disimular). - -cae-, Jul 10, 2012
wouldn't mean the same (as)*** .....if what you want to express is (equis) or (equis)*** ...tu oración no tiene sentido tal como es ahora. - ruiseñor, Jul 11, 2012

"Bueno, cuando dije que no tuve relaciones sexuales con esa mujer, no estaba disimulando nada. Lo que hicimos con nosotros no era considerado como las relaciones sexuales. Por eso, nunca les mentí."

"Well now, when I said that I did not have sexual relations with that woman, I wasn't hiding anything. What we did with each other did not count as sexual relations. Therefore, I never lied to you."
