Why is the word 'Vamos' used to cheer Spanish sportsmen or sports teams? Doesn't it literally mean "we (all) go"?

Yes it does, but another meaning is "let's go." So if you think of it that way, it's a very common way to cheer for your team.

I don't think that a cheering "vamos" could be translated into English or any language that doesn't have a conjugation as inflected as the Romance languages conjugations. Curiously though, I wouldn't use the verb to go to do an approximation, but the exact opposite, to come, used as in come on, or a less similar "bring it on"
