I need help trying to find when to use hace instead of the past perfect or any other tenses. Can you show me when to use it?

Cuánto tiempo hace que....+ present verb= How long has it been since...

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que juegas al golf?

How long have you been playing golf for?

Hace [time period] que...+ verb= It has been [time] since...

Hace 14 años que juego al golf.

It's been 14 years since I started playing golf.

Kevin,

Not to sound rude or ignorant- but might I suggest changing your Spanish proficiency to 3 or 2? Since I don't know your exact knowledge of the language I will leave it up to you but usually someone fluent in a language is able to speak it (of all ways..) fluently. In other words, you know just as much as a native would.

It helps us know your language proficiency when we answer questions.

Okay, thanks, it's was just that I'd thought since I'd finished all of my lesson I could change Advanced to fluency. - k31v1n, Jul 2, 2012
No worries, I wished it worked like that! It takes many, many years to become fluent. - BradyLabuda, Jul 2, 2012
