abandonar / abandonarse

Question

Why are you leaving me? I am not sure what is correct translation of this sentence into Spanish.

¿Por qué me abandonas? (This looks as if it was from the word: abandonarse - and it has different meaning from abandonar = to leave someone/something.)

¿Por qué abandonas de mí? (This is my second attempt.)

Abandonar means to leave/abandon, the pronominal form abandonarse + a means to abandon yourself to something or to let yourself go.

Your sentence comes into the first category because otherwise the reflexive pronoun would have to match the verb conjugation:

me abandono

te abandonas etc

The me (spanish) in your sentence is just the personal pronoun me meaning me (eng) used as a direct object

If you want to say why are you leaving/abandoning me, as you have shown correctly, it would be ¿por qué me abandonas? but if you're in the moment that it's happening it could also be ¿por qué me estás abandonando?
