What is the difference between these three words as referring to a lesbian? In what contexts would one use each word? I know it seems weird , but I think it's a valid question.

For the sake of educational purposes I feel it necessary to point out if one of the words was "marimacho" it's not a curse word and it means something like "tomboy" (for a young girl) and "butch" (for a woman). smile If you don't know what those are, it's a girl/ woman who likes to be very masculine and play with the guys and even many times dress like a guy. Not all of them are lesbian, but nowadays, it's safe to assume most are. tongue laugh Anyways, it's only offensive to someone who knows what they're doing isn't right (participating in this topics activities), or to someone who is immature (they may not even be in the group but want to pity them). wink

Lesbiana is the word for lesbian, the other two are slang for lesbian in some countries, but not all, and can be offensive.

Was the other word tortillera? There's nothing overly offensive about this commonly used term in Spanish (peninsula). It's a well-known term and is even amusing when you analyse it. It's not exclusive to lesbians. Huevos are not only eggs but also balls (testicles). Someone who makes a tortilla has to break the eggs and whisk them. La tortillera does thatgrin

Lesbiana is the proper term.

The other two terms that you had (I edited them out) were offensive and not okay to use.

Thank you for clarifying that. I had no idea that they were offensive. Thanks for editing that out for me and saving me from breaking any rules. - MeEncantaLaPlaya, Jun 26, 2012
