Today is Saturday. That is why school is closed. The students are not here.
Hoy es el sábado. Por eso es que la escuela está cerrada. Los estudiantes no están aquí.

One, Hoy es el sábado, the article can't be there when talking about what day it is; if, on the other hand you talk about something that happens on a certain day, then the article should be included, examples:
¿qué día es hoy? // (hoy es) martes
¿qué día fue antier? // (antier fue) miércoles
¿qué día es el asado? // el domingo
¿cuándo llegas? // (llego) el sábado
When using plurals you should add the article too:
¿qué días no hay clases? // los sábados y domingos

I think in the middle part you could just say "Por eso la escuela está cerrada".
