Hola:

Sé que en América Latina la palabra "coger" puede ser vulgar y tener una connotación sexual, aunque las palabras como "recoger" y "acoger" etc. etc. ¿son completamente aceptables?

You are right about this word.

In Spain it is common to hear "coger" used to mean "grab" as "grab a cab." This is a difficult thing for Latin Americans visiting or living in Spain, as they are not used to hearing this word in polite company in this usage.

So, expect to hear it in Spain. Don't use it in South America. When in Rome, do as the Romans.

I think s/he means about the derivatives of "coger". Such as "recoger", "escoger", "acoger", etc. - PumpkinCalabaza, Jun 18, 2012
Are those bad words in South America? - PumpkinCalabaza, Jun 18, 2012
Exacto. Ya sé que "coger" puede ser vulgar. Yo no estaba seguro con respecto a "recoger", escoger", etc. - mr_wookie, Jun 18, 2012

I believe so. You can check the dictionary, as most have some kind of note if a word is vulgar in certain areas. But in my experience they are just normal words.
