take after someone = resemble a family member EXAMPLE: I take after my mother. We are both impatient.

take something apart =purposely break into pieces EXAMPLE:He took the car brakes apart and found the problem.

take something back = return an item EXAMPLE: I have to take our new TV back because it doesn't work.

take off = start to fly EXAMPLE:My plane takes off in five minutes.

take something off = remove something (usually clothing) EXAMPLE:Take off your socks and shoes and come in the lake!

take something out = remove from a place or thing EXAMPLE:Can you take the garbage out to the street for me?

take someone out =pay for someone to go somewhere with you EXAMPLE:My grandparents took us out for dinner and a movie.

Take out = to kill

The mobster took out the competition.

Take in = to absorb / phrase in sewing

The seamstress took in the garment

I love to take in the scenery when I travel the countryside.

Take up = to start / phrase in sewing

The tailor took up the hem on my pants.

I think I'll take up cooking.

Take down = to remove something

Take down that painting...it's hideous!

It's hard to take in all the rules about the subjunctive..

My brother has taken in a lodger, he felt sorry for the poor boy.
