In the U.S. the term "hispanic" indicates that a person is a native Spanish-speaking individual from South or Central America or the Carribean.

From Wikipedia:

The U.S. Office of Management and Budget currently defines "Hispanic or Latino" as "a person of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race". The 2010 Census asked if the person was "Spanish/Hispanic/Latino". "The terms "Hispanic" or "Latino" refer to persons who trace their origin or descent to Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Spanish speaking Central and South America countries, and other Spanish cultures. Origin can be considered as the heritage, nationality group, lineage, or country of the person or the person's parents or ancestors before their arrival in the United States. People who identify their origin as Hispanic or Latino may be of any race."

My husband is originally from Ecuador and has lived in the U.S. since the age of 4. He does not like the term and prefers "Latino."

The ancient area of Hispania included Andorra, Portugal, Spain and the territory of Gibraltar. Today the word 'hispanic' is mainly used to refer to those having some kind of connection to Spain and more often than not makes reference to the fact that they speak Spanish. smile

Hey Zayesha, just in case you haven't noticed, the word Spain is derived from the word Hispania (which was the Roman name for the province). But I'm sure you have. :P - inkubzz, Jun 10, 2012
