Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Al día siguiente, visitamos todos los sitios turísticos en la ciudad.

The following day, we visited all the tourist sites in the city.

2. No puedo hacerlo hoy. ¿Qué tal el siguiente lunes?

I can't do it today. How about next Monday?

Idioms:

1. ¡El siguiente!

Next, please!

My grandfather used to say, "Men are like streetcars. If you miss one, the next will be by in a few minutes."

Mi abuelo solía decir, 'Los hombres son como tranvías. Si pierdes uno, el siguiente vendrá tras unos pocos minutos. "

Hi Joyce, maybe vendrá or llegará for 'will be by' - Kiwi-Girl, Jun 10, 2012
wow, JoyceM. I have never heard it like this. I have heard only: "There is many fish in the sea." But this yours is a new one.:)) Thanks for sharing your grandfather´s thoughts. - iana01, Jun 10, 2012
"el siguiente llegará tras unos pocos minutos" o "el siguiente llegará unos cuantos minutos después." - -cae-, Jun 10, 2012
But "vendrá" sounds better for me instead of "llegará". Saludos. - -cae-, Jun 10, 2012

En la medianoche su vida pareció oscura y se sintió muy abadido. Pero a la salida del sol el día siguiente de repente todo pareció mejor y una solución de sus problemas empezó aparecer.

caefuego has corrected this, changing tense to the imperfecto and also some other words:

A medianoche su vida parecía muy oscura y él se sentía muy abandonado. Pero al amanecer del siguiente día, de pronto todo se veía mejor y una solución a sus problemas empezó a aparecer".

Gracias caefuego.

In the middle of the night his life seemed dark and he felt very depressed. But at sunrise on the following day suddenly everything seemed better and a solution to his problems started to appear.

I don't know this word for "depressed" and neither does the dictionary. Is it "deprimido?" - JoyceM, Jun 10, 2012
Perhaps, "abandon ado" - "abandoned?" - JoyceM, Jun 10, 2012
I love your picture too Jenny! - rac1, Jun 10, 2012

We couldn't find a hotel that had vacant rooms so we continued traveling through the night. We decided to find another hotel the following day.

Thank you mcl020. I believe traveling can be spelled with one "l" or two. :) Thanks for the corrections, Carlos. There were many! - GraceM, Jun 11, 2012

Durante la época de los dragones, si estaban visto, la siguiente cosa que podrían ver era aliento de fuego!

During the times of the dragons, if they were seen, the next thing they might see was fire breath!

Hi Margherite, despues de 'ver' :) I think that the phrase 'despues de' is acting as a preposition here so if there is no change of subject or 'que' after despues you will follow it with the infinitive. - Kiwi-Girl, Jun 10, 2012
