Is there a special meaning....?

I’ve noticed that more than just a few words end in ista. For example: Castrista for Castro. In the dictionary, Castrista is alluded to as an adj. that is used both (mf). But, is there a special meaning for words with ista? Thanks!

Hm, this is an interesting question! I'll take a shot at it.

Words that end in "ista" involve a profession. Examples:

  • florista - florist

  • jazzista - jazz musician

  • polista - polo player

  • futbolista - football player

Every word that I've found so far ending in "ista" refers to the person doing the job. So, I guess that's the meaning of it--if it ends in "ista," it's almost certainly referring to someone who does a job or plays a sport.

Hope this helps!

And all those words ending in ista are nuetral nouns so if for example you are referring to a taxi driver for instance it is El taxista: Male taxi driver and La taxista female taxi driver.
