Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Me colocaron como jefe de este proyecto.

They put me in charge of this project.

2. Coloca los carteles en esa pared.

Put the posters on that wall.

Los anuncios fueron colocados en la puerta del autobús como un aviso de seguridad.

The advertisements were placed on the door of the bus as a safety reminder.

Tras obtener mi primer millón, invertí la mayor parte en bienes raíces.

After I made my first million, I put most of my investments in real estate.

Lay ,hang ,invest .When can I use these verbs ? - luisssito 4 hrs ago

To get (job)=colocar?? It seems according to the dictionary you can use colocar for getting a job - but I haven't seen it used that way myself, I would also go with your example 'conseguir' empleo. .He HAS to get a job=él tiene que conseguir empleo - luisssito 4 hrs ago

Hey Luissito - you can say: lay (extiende, colocar)

Lay the cloth flat on the table. Extiende la tela sobre la mesa

Can't you see that I'm laying bricks? ¿No puede ver que coloco ladrillos?

The picture is hanging on the wall. El cuadro está colgado en la pared.

To hang wallpaper = empapelar

The bank invests in the stock market. El banco invierte en la bolsa.

I hope that helps smile Saludos

I would really like to get this job when I grow up.

Reamente quería colocar este trabajo cuando crezca.

CORRECTED: "Realmente quería tener este trabajo cuando creciera"

Just as a side point iana - although your translation is fine - quise in the preterite does give the feeling that the action was finished in the past - so it's a bit like saying 'I tried' to get the job but didn't :) - Kiwi-Girl, Jun 9, 2012
oopsssss , Sorry, Kiwi, I have changed the sentence meanhile you wrote this messate. I did not see you wrote it. Thanks a lot for the explanation. So for everyone to know: The original sentence was: Realmente quise colocar este trabajo. - iana01, Jun 9, 2012

get = conseguir u obtener o, incluso, tener. Si traduzco literalmente: "Realmente quisiera tener este trabajo cuando crezca". - -cae-, Jun 10, 2012
[...] pero creo que lo que quieres decir es "Realmente quería tener este trabajo cuando creciera" (si lo que estás haciendo es evocando un recuerdo y reconociendo que en tu infancia tu trabajo actual era lo que querías hacer). - -cae-, Jun 10, 2012

Creo que no será desmasiado difícil colocar trabajo para mi perro, tiene bastante talento como cocinero.

I don't think it will be all that difficult to find a job for my dog, he is a rather talented cook.
