el marinero (mah-ree-neh'-roh)

noun ( sailor, seaman, seafarer, mariner )

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Mi padrino era marinero con la marina de guerra y también era soldado con el ejército.

My godfather was a sailor in the Navy and also a soldier in the Army.

2. Todos los hombres en su familia han sido marineros.

All the men in her family have been sailors.

Idioms:

1. Donde manda capitán, no manda marinero.

What the boss says, goes.

The man who has a girl in every port is not a sailor but a wholesaler.

El hombre que tiene una mujer en cada uno de los puertos no es un marinero sino un mayorista.

Su carrera como un marinero fue breve, ya que sufrió mareos, nostalgia y aguafobia. Pero por lo menos, le había dado una oportunidad.

His career as a sailor was a short one, as he suffered from seasickness, homesickness and aquaphobia. But at least, he had given it a try.

En el pasado, los marineros usaron las estrellas guiar sus barcos.

In the past, sailors used the stars to guide their ships.

En los días antiguamente, los marineros hicieron una pulsera para su novia para llevar por la buena suerte mientras él estaba fuera en el mar.

In the days of old, the sailors made ??a bracelet for his girlfriend for good luck while he was away at sea.

Soy un marinero antiguo ,

navegar por el océano azul,

y sé tu piensa que me gusta lo,

pero no me gusta el sabor de ron,

aunque me gusta los marineros que lo beben.

I am an ancient mariner,

sailing the ocean blue,

I know you think I like it

but I hate the taste of Rum

though love the sailors who drink it.enter image description here

My father was a sailor in the navy and in the 70's we all wanted to wear his bell-bottoms.

Mi padre era un marinero en la marina y en los años 70, todos quisimos nos llevar sus pantalones de campana.
