El instituto vs La institución
¿Cuál es la diferencia? - What is the difference?
I mistook one for the other in an online study question, but don´t quite understand.

I think el instituto is a type of school for an age group, I think it is for the ones that leave colegio ( that's for quite young children). Instituto polytecnico, that type of thing.
La instiución refers to instututions, any institution, suchas a mental hospital or an institution for delinquents.
I'll look it up later, I'm busy, maybe somebody else will give a better answer.

I seem to be right. la institución seems to be specifically for rehabilitation type of schooling and education. - annierats, Jun 5, 2012
