Dar calabazas

Dar calabazas

I'd like to know if in English there's a similar expression like "Dar calabazas" (to give pumpkins).

In Spanish "Dar calabazas" means when a girl/boy doesn't want to go out with you, and you try to persuade him/her, but he/she always says "no". This action is "dar calabazas".

Ex: Le pedí a María de salir conmigo a la fiesta pero me dio calabazas.

In English I think you say:

"to give sb the brush-off"

I'm right, am I?... Do you know any similar expressions?

Thanks in advance

To turn someone/something down = to decline, to refuse, to say "no"

I asked Maria to go to the party with me, but she turned me down.

Yes, you are right. I take it you mean similar English expressions meaning the same thing.

To snub

To rebuff

To dismiss abruptly

Annierats, en español sería:

  • "Darle puerta"
  • "Darle una patada"

You can also say "She shut him down" or which is slang for 'she turned him down'. From the opposite perspective you can say "He struck out each time he asked her out" which is a baseball reference and slang for being rejected.

Struck out would mean physical violence, to hit, in England. We only have cricket here, a gentler sport. - annierats, Jun 5, 2012

If you have a relationsship for a while you can then dump the girl. More often she dumps the boy, nowdays, I have noticed. Obviously, if you have been snubbed, a dumping situation will not arise, however.

En español; Echar al novio o le da una pata?

There are other expressions for "brush off" say as to brush off an advance or a suggestion.

No hacerle caso a alguien - To ignore somebody

o

Hacer caso omiso de algo - To ignore something.
