Hola Cohan. You might want to watch Lesson 3.14. It totally covers the meanings and differences. - Esteban3304, Jun 5, 2012

I take notes on Paralee's lessons and save them. I refer to them often as they provide a quick review of the material covered.

Here's a brief portion of my notes on Lesson 3.14:

convertirse - to indicate a change in an object or thing

hacerse - permanent change in profession, wealth, etc.

ponerse - temporary emotional change

volverse - sudden, negative change in emotions

In the Fase song, "Acapulco 78", Alma Velasco sings "me pongo bailar" which means, "I start to dance". This meaning and usage of "ponerse" was not covered in Paralee's lesson.

Ponerse, hacerse, volverse, convertirse. I think it depends on what subject you are referring to. For example you might use ponerse fuerte as in working out to become strong, but really I would use ponerse for something like clothing, as in ponerse los zapatos (put on shoes). Hacerse sounds more like to make ones self something, again you could use it like hacerce fuerte (become strong) or hacerce desayuno, (make yourself breakfast). Volverse sounds more like would be used for returning or could be used in becoming as in one going crazy, like volverse loco. Convertirse is used more for becoming/converting/changing as in a caterpillar that turns into a butterfly. If you were looking for a word for "get" I'm not sure these would be appropriate unless you were trying to imply making ones self available to receive, as in ponerse disponible a recibir,
hope that helps!
