guardar (gwar-darr')

verb ( to keep, to save; to put away; to guard, to keep watch over )

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Guárdame un pedazo de pastel, por favor.

Save me a piece of cake, please.

2. Guardaron este castillo por cuarenta días.

They defended this castle for forty days.

Idioms:

1. guardar cama

to stay in bed

The teacher kept watch over the students in her classroom and suddenly she saw that one student was erasing something in his notebook. So the teacher asked: What are you doing, Mark? Mark replied: You told me to correct my F so I am trying to do it.

Sometimes words are not capable of changing hearts. Still, let me keep my tears and my sorrows in this little piece of paper. It is my only refuge until you find the key to open my heart.

Hi Katy! You might translate slice as "rebanada" when you are talking about food (pan, jamón, queso), you might say "pedazo" too when talking about cheese. - -cae-, Jun 5, 2012
So, you could say "Guárdame este pedazo de queso por si acaso tengo hambre más tarde". - -cae-, Jun 5, 2012

The best treasure that we may save(guard, keep, put away, keep watch over) are definitely our parents who bring us up to be honest and hard-working.

El mejor tesoro que podemos conservar son definitivamente nuestros padres que nos educan para ser honestos y trabajadores.

Creo que es mejor y más saludable si las personas se expresan, en lugar de guardar un silencio total.
Afortudanamente, hay muchas maneras diferentes en que podemos expresarnos.
Nadie tiene que correr el riesgo de implosión.

I think it's better and healthier if people express themselves, instead of keeping total silence. Luckily, there are many different ways in which we can express ourselves. Nobody has to run the risk of imploding.
