Today write sentences with "break up"

Hello everyone. I think phrasal verbs are some of the most difficult to many English learners because most of them do not have a literal translation. So I have decided to learn one or two phrasal verbs every day. And I know you can help me with that, but you also need to learn Spanish, so please write the sentence in English using the PV then try it in Spanish. Then I will correct your sentence (the Spanish sentence, of course); we will help each other out. Today write sentences with "break up".

To break up (tr./intr.): destruir, desintegrar.desmantelar (machine, company)

The rocket broke up when it entered the atmosphere.

El cohete se destruyó cuando entró en la atmósfera.

To break up (intr.): Finalizar (meeting, fiesta, curso escolar...) (Inglés americano)

The meeting with our salesmen broke up at 2 o'clock in the morning.

La reunión con nuestros vendedores teminó a las dos de la mañana.

I can't hear you. You're breaking up.

No puedo escucharte. Estás rompiendo. Tienes una mala conexión.

Breaking up (phone) = not being able to hear properly because of a bad connection or static on the line.

Hi Chesa:). No puedo escucharte.Estás rompiendo(In this context ,it doesn´t make sense)it should be:Tienes una mala conección.Actually, there are many phrases that you can use - luisssito, May 30, 2012
De nada, Silvy!:) I guess this is one of those things that you can't translate literally to Spanish. I think "tienes una mala conección" would be perfect in this case. Gracias, Luis. :) - cheskasullivan, May 30, 2012
You`re welcome:) - luisssito, May 30, 2012

You have to break up the dirt before you plant the flowers.

Tienes que aflojar la tierra antes de plantas las flores.

Here is an example where to loosen and to break up mean the same thing. smile

Pregunté a Claudia por qué rompió con su novio, y ella me dijo que su novio le había dicho tantas mentiras que ya no pudo soportarlo.

I asked Claudia why she broke up with her boyfriend, and she told me that her boyfriend had told her so many lies that she couldn't take it anymore.

La desintegración de la compañía no fue planeado. ( la división de una organización grande en partes más pequeñas)

Hi Noetol your sentence sounds ok ,but it should a bit better to say:El humorista dijo una broma que me hizo reir a carcajadas. - luisssito, May 30, 2012
Thanks, luis! - Noetol, May 30, 2012
Noetol, your sentence does not make sense to me. I would never say ''broke me up'' but rather ''cracked me up'' - 5454CkMac, May 31, 2012

Hi Kiwi :) well done!! Thanks a lot for the synonym that really helps me a lot. I have a question,in this sentence "break up=break down? - luisssito, May 30, 2012
Yes Luis both work and to tell the truth, break down would probably be a better choice in this example although I think I can get away with 'broke up' jeje ;) Well done, you seem to be getting on very well with your phrasal verbs. - Kiwi-Girl, May 30, 2012
In fact in real life I'd probably say 'he dismantled' but that's just me :) - Kiwi-Girl, May 30, 2012
