I'm reading a book by a Cuban and he keeps referring to "premios gordos" and "premios flacos". Can anyone tell me the connotation of these phrases?

El gordo is the big lotterie draw that they have at Christmas here in Spain not heard of premios flacos but should think it means lesser amounts but still worth winning "algo es algo" as they say "better than nothing" Gordo literally means fat whereas flaco means skinny a superlative to delgado, slim.
