Hey everyone,

I'd like to know - what do YOU do for a living? When did you start in your current job and what do you like (or even what don't you like) about it?

See this as a writing practice and give your answer in English and Spanish. And, of course, feel free to add a picture smile

I am a teacher at a secondary school and my subjects are English and Arts&Crafts;. It's my first year and I really enjoy my job!

thanks rac1, but by now I have the feeling of my posts being completely ignored. Maybe because I'm the newbie here, I don't know... - Machri, May 28, 2012

Nice post! I'm the first to answer. ..weird. I doubt that it's because of you being new. I like your ideas. - t1funnyface, May 28, 2012

Hola Marchri. Tal vez algunas personas aun sean reticentes a responder a tu pregunta por ser algo "personal", ¿no crees? - -cae-, May 29, 2012

Machri I don't agree with Caefuego. This is a Spanish forum!!!!... In fact, I had asked what is the colour of our underwear!!! - josemaloru, May 29, 2012
thanks, josemaloru. I'm with you in this, only asking may lead to better understanding, only practice leads to ability of using a language. only practice making fun makes sense... - Machri, May 29, 2012
- -cae-, May 31, 2012

I´ve been a piano tuner for 28 years. When I was in the Peace Corps in the Caribbean, I met a man who was a musician and tuner. He inspired me to follow the profession. When I returned to the US, I met a Chilean who taught me to tune. After so many years, I still enjoy the work. The pianos are similar, but the owners are very different and interesting. I have traveled to all parts of the Sacramento area. The only thing I don´t like is all the driving. As I get older, I try to work more for clients who live close to me.

I babysit a 5-yr-old girl whom I absolutely love. She respects and loves me, so it's actually fun to babysit her. I've know her for two years, and have been babysitting her for about a year now. We are good friends.

Somos buenos amigos.

According to Jose, this is how it should be written:

Few people say "whom" anymore, but I think that it would be technically better to say "I babysit a five year old girl whom I absolutely love." - quoththeraven, May 29, 2012

I´m originally an Electrical Engineer, but have been working as a motorcycle race tuner and part time racer for nearly 10years. Recently, I have been working with some Mexican racers, including their Junior National Champion. It is a good opportunity to improve my Spanish and learn the technical terms in my area.

Other people can correct me if I'm wrong (I'm not absolutely sure I'm right) but I think that you say "una foto" rather than "un foto" because foto is an abbreviation of a feminine word. - quoththeraven, May 29, 2012
And, by the way, your job sounds really cool. - quoththeraven, May 29, 2012
That's correct. 'foto' comes from fotografía ...and remains fem. I also don't think you capitalize 'electrical engineer' ..and you'd write 'una buena oportunidad' - sinsonte, May 29, 2012
That is definitely awesome, by the way. - sinsonte, May 29, 2012
Thanks for the corrections. Yes, I need to think of 'fotografia', not 'foto' to get the correct gender. Buena I knew, but somehow got wrong. Grrrrr. Must quit letting my English background cause me to double consonants inappropriately. Thanks again. - rogspax, May 29, 2012
Oh, and yes, I'm lucky to have a job I enjoy so much. I just grew tired of engineering, and wanted a different challenge. Now racing is getting too easy, so I start a new challenge - Spanish. - rogspax, May 29, 2012
wow! that sounds really exciting!!! - Machri, May 29, 2012

I work for an urban school district as an administrator managing the before and after school programs. Sadly, my job, which I love, is grant-funded and comes to an end at the end of June. I have worked for many years in community and economic development, but I would like to continue to work in public school reform.

sad to hear this has to end - is there no opportunity to keep this important position for you? like a fund raising event or something like that? - Machri, May 29, 2012
¡Buen español!. You has had an only mistake. In Spanish profesions doesn't have "a/an" (soy ingeniero, soy profesor,...), so you should write "como administradora" without "una" - josemaloru, May 29, 2012
Marchri, our schools are under enormous financial pressures right now. Apparently armed conflict abroad and bank bailouts are more important priorities than our youth. - JoyceM, May 29, 2012
Jose, thanks for the compliment. For me, one mistake is a record! - JoyceM, May 29, 2012
I will stay active in the community and working on behalf of youth in some capacity. For example, I have started a youth chess network, providing chess sets to places with youth programming this summer and helping to organize a tournament in September. - JoyceM, May 29, 2012

I've been working as a public worker in a University for 10 years. I speak French and a little English.

Question:

Which is it better?

"I've been working" or "I'm working"...

People use all the time "I'm working" (present continuous), but my English teacher once told us that it was better to say "I've been working" (present perfect continuous)...

Your teacher was right. :) - cheskasullivan, May 28, 2012
Both are correct, but it depends on if you are speaking of the past, "I've been working" or the present, "I'm working", that's all. - rac1, May 28, 2012
Since you say how long you've bee working, it's perfect to say, "I've been working...." especially when asked 'how long". If the question is more for the present or here and now (What are you doing in Santiago?) you would say "I 'm working as as...." - katydew, May 28, 2012
I'm working.. You're still working and have been working. Ongoing. Have been working might well have stoped.. - annierats, May 28, 2012
sorry for the double as, as..... you only need one... ;o) - katydew, May 28, 2012
Cheskausulliv... I'm speaking in present - josemaloru, May 28, 2012
Yes, I know what you meant. Katydew explained it well. Your teacher probably thought the same. :p - cheskasullivan, May 28, 2012
Yes, for a time starting in the past and still ongoing, I´ve been working is better. Also, though it may not be obvious, we´d normally say in A university, not in AN university. - rogspax, May 29, 2012
That is because the sound is more important than the letter, and the U in University has an English-Y (like your LL) sound which is a CONSONANT SOUND, even though U is a vowel. Clear as mud? A bit like Spanish´s Español e Inglés - rogspax, May 29, 2012
I'd say "I've been working" is "more correct" as you're still doing it... - Machri, May 29, 2012
Machri, my English teacher said just that, but everyone prefer using "I'm working" (present continous), instead of "I've been working" present perfect continous. Maybe, "I've been working" sounds like a past action... - josemaloru, May 29, 2012
You're right, Jose. "I've been working" is how is you'd say it. :)) - t1funnyface, May 29, 2012
I see I left off th 'n' of 'been'... my typing is not great. sorry. - katydew, May 29, 2012
Don't worry katydew! - josemaloru, May 29, 2012

These days I am retired, but I used to be a mathematics teacher and also the mother of three boys. Now I am a grandmother and every Friday I look after my grand-daughter.

Like t1funnyface, I am a babysitter. From time to time I take care of the children of some families that live in my neighborhood. It's a fantastic job because the parents pay me to play with dolls and watch movies with their kids, and, more importantly, I like to take care of and to help kids. But at times it's not very fun, especially when the kids need to go to sleep and they tell me that they won't.

All kinds of stuff: I teach a small class on marsupials, I am a reporter, an editor of a small newspaper, an author, and in the words of Tobin Elad from Target, "and a rather atrocious poet."

Also, I would like to join the U.S. Army (I'm actually a U.S. citizen) and fly planes. Hopefully this fall I will be accepted into one of their programs. Come join my marsupials class!smile I have been teaching for 3 months, reporting/editing for a year and a half, and have been a rather atrocious poet since I was threesmile! enter image description here
