el sótano (soh'-tah-noh)

noun ( basement, cellar (in a house); vault (in a bank) )

Link: instructions post picture

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen.

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Tenemos un montón de decoraciones en el sótano al lado de la lavadora.

We have a ton of decorations in the basement next to the washing machine.

2. Por favor, ponga los diamantes en el sótano inmediatamente.

Please, put the diamonds in the vault right away.

Mi sótano es un lugar muy oscuro y espantoso. ¡Mira donde caminas!

My basement is a very dark and scary place. Watch your step!

Grace, do you see the two eyes? - rac1, May 27, 2012
Now that´s scary! - Nilda-Ballardo, May 27, 2012
Yes, I see the two eyes now. I didn't when I originally decided to use it, though. :) Thanks for the explanation. I actually got the picture from Google, so I don't even know what website it's from. - GraceM, May 27, 2012
Very spooky! - Noetol, May 27, 2012

In some homes, the basement is the warmest room in the house.

En algunos hogares, el sótano es el más cálido lugar en la casa.

A basement full of charity is better than a castle full of pride.

Un sótano lleno de caridad es mejor que un castillo lleno de orgullo. enter image description here

That must have been very scary , I have been in tropical storms where one wonders if it is possible to breathe because of the volume of water that is coming down. - ray76, May 27, 2012
Gracias Luis!! - rac1, May 27, 2012
It was very scary indeed, Ray! - rac1, May 27, 2012
I bet you´re glad you don´t have to worry about tornados, although now you have hurricaines! - Nilda-Ballardo, May 27, 2012
Yes, but unfortunately hurricanes have tornados too. :( - rac1, May 27, 2012
Yo mantendría la integridad de la oración, sólo hay que conectarla basándose en la corrección de Luis: "Yo tenía un enorme sótano en mi casa al que nos íbamos durante..." - -cae-, May 27, 2012

En Ciudad de México es raro que las casas tengan sótano. Los sótanos sólo se ven en casonas viejas, edificios de apartamentos y edificios comerciales que usan sus sótanos como estacionamiento.

enter image description here

In Mexico City it is uncommon that exist houses with basement. You only see basements on old mansion and apartment and comercial buildings that use the basements as a parking area.

El sótano es un buen lugar para cultivar hongos. Si el sótano es húmedo, los hongos pueden crecer allí de todos modos.

The basement is a good place to grow mushrooms. If the basement is damp, mushrooms might grow there anyway.

Es mejor poner sus valores en el sótano , pero no bajo la cama.

Quizá ya haya otros allí.

Corrected sentence,en el sótano que bajo la cama. Quizá ya haya otros allí.

It is better to put your valuables in a vault , but not under the bed.

Perhaps there are already others there .

Ray: It is what it means when you say: "Es mejor poner tus valores en el sótano que bajo la cama" you are giving the advise of NOT putting the valuables under the bed but in the basement. - -cae-, May 27, 2012
