Ray, I'd say this sentence is correct, why do you doubt it?

Es preferible/mejor comprender poco, que no entender mucho.
Es mejor entender un poquito que no entienda cualquier cosa. It is better to understand a little than not understand anything. mejorar doesn't mean better it means to improve and mal mucho doesn't sound right to me it is like a double adjective perhaps you should say malisimo to convey your meaning.
