Just a figurative/spirtual/friendly invocation of sisterhood. As for the diminuative -ita, it doesn't have to mean literally chronologically younger or physically smaller. Can just be a bit like. Hi, my little friend.

They do seem to use it a lot more than English speakers (natives)

Don't take it literally.

In general:

Hermanita = little sister (diminutive of sister)

In México or other countries of America (not in Spain), the word "hermanita" has got another sense:

¿Qué pasa hermanito? = ¿Qué pasa compadre? = ¿Qué pasa muchachote?

In this case "hermanito" means = guy, brother, man

Hey brother!...

In uses like this, it is a term of endearment, like "abuelito" - dear grandpa.
