Words that don't sound as you would think

Question

A few days ago I heard a native speaker pronounce Número. But i was hearing numedo and not the way it is written. This led to my post here, read also the answer/explanation.

• Several years ago, when I came to the U.S , I was listening to a Christian radio station and I kept on hearing this song by Rich Mullins "Awesome God" I went home and spent hours trying to find the translation/meaning of this word to no avail. I read ALL the words that started with "O" and I couldn't find it. Finally I gave up and asked my aunt. She was laughing so hard that couldn't even talk. She was trying to tell me that this word didn't start with "O" but with "A"
• In my mind, it should have been written, OSOM

It makes my ears wiggle to hear someone say, "No hay problema" in either language; in English when it is pronounced, "No hehaayee problehma" (because I know this is wrong) and in Spanish when it is pronounced correctly - because I want to ask if the speaker is a native Spanish speaker .... (yes, my ears do wiggle - especially when my eyebrows go up)

I can't help to hear guerrilla when someone says gorilla, or the other way around, the vowels of those words in Spanish, spelled almost exactly the same but with very different pronunciations, are so different it hasn't come around yet in my mind they sound the same in English.

It took me a long time to realize that the spelling of this thing was 'island' but pronounced "eyeland".
