Prederite & imperfect verbs

I must have been asleep in school when they went over past, imperfect, Present perfect, Pluperfect ect. Can someone give me an easy example to burn into my memory about which to use when?

Since there are, depending on how you desceribe things, at least 14 tenses. You'll have to be a lot more specific to get useful feedback.
