Poly, "la semana pasada" is more natural.
You can use either "estuviste" or "estabas" with the difference being nuance. "Estuviste" indicates that at the exact time you were there, your friend wasn´t there either. Using "Estabas" makes a comparison between your arrival time and the time your friend wasn´t there, so the nuance here is that your friend wasn´t there probably before your arrival and sometime after you left. The time your friend was absent is unknown to you.
