Punctuation is powerful! A funny reinforcement...

So I posted this in La Taberna, but I couldn't resist just making a thread with the point. I've been here many years and many times have seen people ask: "Is spelling really that important?", "Are accents so key?", "Is punctuation that big of a deal?"

The following is a humorous reinforcement... just look at how drastically your message can change!

the importance of punctuation

Thanks to mi amiga MaryMcC from Spanish Help. grin

I found this on another site. I know we have the forum rules, but for those who don't bother to read them, maybe we should do a thread on this order.

"Do you want to help other people? We are happy to have you answer questions posted in our forums if you are polite and if you try to be accurate. If you are not sure about any point, please check your grammar book or dictionary before posting– and don't forget to proofread your writing before you post it! Posts are moderated. If your posts are not polite or helpful, the moderators may edit or delete them. If your posts are often rude or if your answers are often incorrect, a moderator may contact you directly."

Maybe we should have a thread for learning how to properly punctuate sentences. It couldn't hurt.

That´s great, DJ!

This post should be a standard answer for all those students who ask for checking of their work and then write "Don´t worry about lacking accent marks and punctuation, I´m not being graded on that."

Another example. smile

Dear John:

I want a man who knows what love is all about. You are generous, kind, thoughtful. People who are not like you admit to being useless and inferior. You have ruined me for other men. I yearn for you. I have no feelings whatsoever when we're apart. I can be forever happy--will you let me be yours?

Here's one I just recently saw:

Oh, yes! Everyone should read Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynn Truss - the title phrase refers to machine correction of the diet of the panda, not his behavior at the snack bar when insulted by a lout. But, are you sure none of the females in the class did not strike out the first four words and capitalize "man" ???

Although I found this thread fantastic and extremely funny , a part of me cringes

just a smidgen because there are many who are like me that have mild to serious

Dyslexia . I find writing a torturous task , I have to read my sentences over and

over to try and get them right , but even then I fail to see where the correct

punctuation is needed. There are certain words that I cannot see , and no matter

how hard I try to remember them , they are just not there .

Don't let me , forget my mom is dead ,

wrong when she accuses me of being a girl ,

friendly son.

But I do try very hard to get it right !
