Sink translation

I have noticed two ways to translate the noun "sink." One is "el fregadero" and the other is "el lavabo." What is the difference? Is the first to describe a sink in the kitchen, and the second to describe a sink in the bathroom?

Where I grew up we use:
Lavaplatos = Sink for washing dishes (Kitchen sink)
Lavamanos = Sink for washing your hands, face, brush your teeth (Bathroom sink)
Lavabo = Is a term that I never heard before until I came to the U.S and I heard it is used in Mexico
Fregadero = Is the way sink is called in Venezuela
Lavadero = Is where you wash your clothes. Like a washing board.

Hey RichSean, in my country, Peru, we say lavadero, and this goes for the one in the kitchen and then one in the bathroom. I Hope this helps you.

You are welcome. And just one thing, to differenciate them usually we say the place, for example: el lavadero del baño está atorado, el lavadero de la cocina está....blabla. ^^ - Juliss, May 21, 2012
