Seguiré estudiando al español. Seguiré estudiando el español.

• It should be, Seguiré estudiando español -- Neither "al or el" is necessary.

"El" is" the". "Al" is one of the only 2 contractions in Spanish. "Al" is a contraction for "at the". The other contraction in Spanish is "del" which is a contraction for "of the".

Sounds like homework to me...

But in the event that it isn't, "Español" isn't a person or a pet, so I see no need for the personal "a" - (al= a + el). From my understanding, the second of your two sentences seems to be correct. I would even argue that the "el" isn't necessary.. but let's see what a native has to say.
