It was suggested that I start a thread in the forum so that people who live in other countries than the one where they were born can tell us why they do so. Nothing is more exciting to me than the idea of world traveller, so these exceptional people must have some exciting stories to tell and interesting reasons why they choose to live as they do.

Thanks in advance.enter image description here

I'm here. I live in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. I have been coming to Mexico for about 25 years. Mostly day trips to Tijuana and weekends to Ensenada. Then I started doing the Newport to Ensenada yacht race as an instructor. I did this for five years. Then in 1995 I took an advanced sailing class that was supposed to go from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas. The boat had problems and we had to abandon it in Bahia de Tortugas to make our flights home. On the way from Turtle Bay to Los Cabos we stopped in La Paz for one day. In that one day I became enchanted with La Paz. For the next twelve years I vacationed in La Paz two or three times each year. Then in 2007 I single handed (sailed by myself) from San Francisco to La Paz. I lived here for four years. Met my girlfriend and some fantastic friends. I went home the the US for six months to look for work (which I did not find) and while I wasn't miserable I was not happy. I missed La Paz. So about I month ago I returned to La Paz. I do not think I will every leave again except for vacations.

So why do I love La Paz? Well it is a place that reminds me of my childhood in Albuquerque, New Mexico in the 1960's. It is a very pleasant, friendly town with a great waterfront. The desert and the beaches are only minutes away and the islands only a couple of hours away. The waters are the most beautiful I have seen in all of my travels to the Carribean, Central America and the South Pacific. Oh, and the food is great. However, I do miss good pizza and good sushi. But I love the fresh fish and shellfish that are available here. Some things are inexpensive others are not.

La Paz has about 300,000 residents and only 3,000 foreigners (mostly US and Canada with a few Europeans). The climate is hot but not as hot as Arizona.

The people welcome you with open arms if you do the same. I have met fishermen who have nothing but will insist you share a meal with them. Taxi drivers who take you to a beach, leave you there and then worry about you when the weather turns bad. A farmer who gave me a ride across 100 miles of dirt road and refused money for gas. Despite what you see and hear on TV Mexico has very strong family values and is, in my opinion, a much more civilized country than the US.

Also Baja is a little like the wild wild west. Still untamed. You can live as you please as long as you don't disturb others. Very little crime, serious or otherwise. No zoning, no permits, little government interference.

So freedom, natural beauty, great people, safe environment. all in all a great place to live. But you all stay the h*ll were you are. Just kidding. You can come to visit but just don't stay.

Soy sueca.
