Why do I constantly earn '0 rep' although I vote and answer?

Hey everyone,

I'm new here so maybe I just don't get it but in the explanation of the gaining points system it says that you get reputation points for voting up others' questions or answering them. But every time I do so, it says on my profile "You earned 0 rep for voting up". How come?

Hola Machri! I know that if you have already earned 200 in a 24 hour period, you won't earn anymore until the next 24 hour period, as there is a 200 limit every 24 hours. - rac1, May 17, 2012

Yes, rac1 is correct. A maximum of 200 points can be earned in a 24 hour period. I think the reason is to keep people from turning into "point seekers/hoarders", asking silly questions just to get more points. After all, the purpose of SD is not to earn points, but to learn and improve the knowledge of Spanish and English

• However, sometimes, there are people asking and answering legitimate questions that would not earn "deserve" points for their effort, but again, it is better to keep it humble, simple and avoid competition. Even with this points limit, you can see these traits here and there.

I've never looked at the rules and I consistently get 0 reps. Nevertheless I have quite a lot of reps and I don't worry about it at all.

I answer the questions I can, and enjoy doing so and ask an occassional question ( after a bit you've got so used to answering other people's questions that you find you can answer your own too, which is a surprising, but pleasing, development).

These reps are almost worhtless on e-bay, I've tried.. It's not worth worrying about, just keep going and the points will look after themselves.

I don't think it's as simple as just a 200 limit.

Right now I have earned 201 points total, and 191 of them in the last 24h period.

I'm still getting points for being voted up (10s) but I don't get anything for voting others up (1s). Probably there are several limits and different ones on how much you can vote yourself (you could really overdo this, so I think it's a good thing) and how much others can give you in a 24h period.

You know, some psycopath could create ten different identities on here and then spend all day making all ten of them the post popular members on here! lol - Esteban3304, May 23, 2012

I think it has to do with a limit on the amount you can vote and still get points in a certain period of time, i.e. I don't think that they want people just going on every single question all day long and voting hundreds of time without asking or answering any questions. The wouldn't be fair to the people who actually would legitimately use the site.
