riguroso (rree-goo-roh'-soh)

adjective ( rigorous, strict, harsh, severe, hard )

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen!

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Mi madre siempre era muy rigurosa conmigo y mis hermanos.

My mother was always very strict with me and my siblings.

2. Este invierno no era muy riguroso, sino moderado.

This winter wasn't very harsh, but rather moderate.

Thanks for buying me this Einstein watch for my birthday but, please, do not be so strict with me if I am a bit late. First I have to learn how to use it. wink

Gracias por comprarme este de reloj Einsten para mi cumpleaños, pero por favor, no seas rigurosa conmigo si llego un poco tarde. Primero tengo que aprender como usarlo.

El Ártico tiene un clima muy extremo. Dicen que el aumento sin precedentes del calor allí está ejerciendo una gran influencia sobre todo el mundo.

Thanks to Rac:

The Arctic climate is very harsh. They said that the unprecedented high rise of the temperatures there has a great influence all over the world.

Thank you, dear Annie!;)) - Silvia_Tcherneva, May 17, 2012
Hi Silvia. Here (in this sentence and talking about the Artic), the appropiate word would be "extremo" instead of "riguroso". - -cae-, May 18, 2012
Luego, algunas pequeños modificaciones para mejorar la siguiente oración serían recomendables, por ejemplo decir "Dicen que el aumento... del calor allí está ejerciendo una gran influencia". - -cae-, May 18, 2012

En sentido riguroso debería haber lavado los platos. En cambio, estoy ocupado aquí pensando en una frase para la palabra del día. Cuando regrese mi esposa estaré con la soga al cuello.

Strictly speaking I should have done the washing up. Instead I am busy here thinking of a phrase for the word of the day. When my wife returns I am going to be in hot water.

..."never settles"... - rac1, May 17, 2012
Very true :) And Annie, I think it might be fine as "never settle" because harsh words + poor reasoning are two things (or more if you count all the harsh words) - i.e. "they never settle anything" instead of "they never settles anything". - vanecessary, May 17, 2012
It's plural as Vanny said , Thanks Annie + Vany . :)). - shish75, May 17, 2012

Hola Jennysk. If you said "deben aprender un pensamiento riguroso" the word "pensamiento" means "una idea" not a way of thinking. - xtiagox, May 17, 2012
Para mi es mejor "deben aprender a pensar rigurosamente ...... no siempre ocurre" - xtiagox, May 17, 2012
I think it does happen.. just not on the things that they need to think about (i.e. schoolwork). :p - cheskasullivan, May 17, 2012
Thanks everyone. Ok I could say 'to think rigorously' and turn the WotD into an adverb, but to use it as an adjective I want to say 'rigorous thinking'. So what is a noun for 'thinking'? - jennysk, May 18, 2012
