In ancient western Europe, there were many populated areas that were isolated from each other by geography and the inability to travel. In each of those regions, local languages developed. As innovations occurred, people were able to communicate with other groups that were a little farther away. So the areas where people spoke a commonly accepted language grew much larger. Then came the Roman Invasion. The Romans ruled over these groups. The groups were forced to learn the Roman's language in order to communicate with their rulers. Then the Roman Empire collapsed. In the region we now call Spain, the local people continued to improve their technology and their language which had been greatly influenced by the Romans while they were there. Then, a Spanish writer named Cervantes wrote some books. One of his goals as a writer was to entertain, but another goal was to codify a commonly-accepted language with grammar and spelling rules. So that is how Spanish became a language. Hope this helps to answer your question.
