Generally one should learn to use a Spanish-English dictionary to find answers to a question like this. I use a free online dictionary at wordreference dot com. I think it is pretty good. On my smart phone, my tablet, and my computer, I also have downloaded dictionaries. Dictionaries have a lot of very useful information in them, and I strongly urge you to use dictionaries and improve your dictionary skills if they are lacking. Knowing how to effectively use a dictionary is a must if you want to learn a foreign language.

As for the word "chef" translated to Spanish, it could be any of the following: el jefe, la jefa, el jefe de cocina ... el cocinero, la cocinera.

All these words have pretty much the same meaning, but if there are nuances in the meaning, again looking in a dictionary is where you want to be.
