The difference between "consejera" and "asesora"

What is the difference between consejera and asesora? I'm a school counselor and I was presented to a group of Spanish-speaking families as "asesora." I've always used the word "consejera." When I think of "asesora" I think of "asesoramiento" which in my community we use to mean assessment. Any thoughts? As always, thank you!

For a school counselor, I would use Orientadora. Consejera sounds like a confiding friend or someone of diplomatic stature. Asesora is more of a consultant.

Or an adviser ...which is what a counselor is. That's probably why the native Spanish speaker introduced her as asesora. It could be a matter of semantics. - sinsonte, May 11, 2012
