How to translate "igual que"?

"Igual que" means "the same as, just as", but here I've got one sentence that I just cannot understand.
Se fue igual que (venir, él) ______ .
I really can't get this... And there isn't any context, all we've got is just this sentence... According to the exercise's description I've got to put one of the past tenses. But I just want you to help me with the translation, I'll do the rest by myself.

He left the same as he came. Se fue igual que vino. Note that "se fue" is conjugated from the verb "Irse" and not "Ir".
