enfrente (en-fren'-teh)

adverb ( opposite; in front )

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen!

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Lo puso enfrente de ti ayer.

He put it in front of you yesterday.

2. Trabajo justo enfrente de mi restaurante favorito.

I work just across the street from my favorite restaurant.

Alguna vez le decía a mi novia, "unéme enfrente de Soriana. Y esperaba para siempre porque ella no me encontraba. ¿Por qué no me encontraba? Porque en México el significado de enfrente es por el otro lado de la calle.

Once I asked my girlfriend, meet me in front of Soriana. And I waited for ever because she never found me. Why didn't she find me? Because in Mexico the meaning of "enfrente" is across the street from ....

Note: If you mean literally in front of a store you use , a fuera de Soriana, If you are in the store you use, adentro de Soriana. Across the street is enfrente de Soriana.

It is better if you park your car in the garage rather then in front of your house.

Es mejor que estaciones tu coche en tu garaje que enfrente de tu casa.

Silvy, amiga,Thanks.:)) I like retro cars too. Here in my country one spring weekend people who owe cars like these meet in the capital city and they drive these cars in the streets of the city slowely, so you can enjoy the view. - iana01, May 10, 2012
Silvy, Moreower, the owners of these cars are dressed in clothes which people used to wear in past in the time, when particular car was made. So it is really interesting. One day you must come to visit me, Silvy. I am sure you would like it. It´s great.:) - iana01, May 10, 2012

This phenomenon has a name: 'the power of number':none of the persons can help due to the presence of so many other 'potential' helpers. There is a lot of info on it in the book 'Mindwatching' by H. and M. Eysenck) - mcl020, May 10, 2012

¿"Es un importante estar enfrente de situaciones peligrosas"? Maybe you meant "at front" (to be the leader). Well, maybe it is important to be careful, but to be "in front" doesn't sound very tempting to me jaja. - -cae-, May 10, 2012

"Cuando la vio sonriendo frente a él, [entonces] lo supo, era amor a primera vista". - -cae-, May 11, 2012
También podrías decir "fue amor a primera vista", aunque por la descripción de la escena suena mejor decir "era amor a primera vista" - -cae-, May 11, 2012
Para usar "fue", habría que cambiar un poco los signos de puntuación, así: "... entonces lo supo. Fue amor a primera vista" - -cae-, May 11, 2012

¿Cómo [es eso de] que no puedes encontrarlo?¡Está allí! ("Lo tienes allí") ¡Delante de tu mano! ("Frente a tu mano")". Bien hecho Missy, la cuestión aquí es que "enfrente" no suena tan bien. - -cae-, May 11, 2012
A la inversa, también puedes usar 'enfrente" como sinónimo de "frente", cuando "frente" no suena bien, por ejemplo, si "enfrente" viene a ser la única palabra en la oración. - -cae-, May 11, 2012
