How to say "scary"

Hola, I am describing a lion and i am not sure from the online translation given how to say they are scary or frightening. So far I have "Los leones tienen mas pelo que otros animales. Son grandes, comen mucho animales, y asustan." I am just not sure if "asustan" is the correct way of saying they are scary. Gracias

Hola, Jennifer.

I looked up 'asustar' in my dictionary and found that it is a transitive verb. That means it needs a direct object -- something that receives the action of the verb. Thus, the lion could 'austa' (scare) a person, but it cannot 'scare' or be scary by itself.

But, the term "dan miedo" works well.

Best wishes,

John

Also, asustar can be used as a reflexive verb, meaning to "be scared/frightened", so I would recommend avoiding it as originally proposed.

"Los leones tienen mas pelo que otros animales. Son grandes, comen mucho animales, y asustan." it's a good translation if you want, you can use "y dan miedo" instead "y asustan"
