That's funny because you can say "Es la una y media" as well as "Son la una y media". The difference between each sentence implies 'time' in a singular and plural form. For the first sentence we're using "Es" in singular form; for the second sentence "Son" is used in plural form. Here's why: you can ask in spanish -¿Qué hora es?- (singular form) or -¿Qué horas son?- (plural). Both questions are valid in spanish.
