"En números rojos" or "En saldo rojo" means you owe money! That is the amount of money you are in the hole, in debt! In the negative numbers!

Is "to be in debt", financially in it's original meaning. It's also used figuratively to indicate when someone hasn't been living up to what other person expected from him or her.
