la protesta (pro-teh'-stah)

noun ( protest; objection )

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen!

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. La profesora siempre desoía las protestas de los estudiantes.

The teacher always ignored the students' protests.

2. Actualmente hay protestas en docenas ciudades en los Estados Unidos.

Currently there are protests in dozens of cities in the United States.

I notice that many answers are using the verb protestar not the noun as given. Does this matter ? - jennysk, May 2, 2012
¡Hola, amigos! ¡Mil gracias!:)) - Silvia_Tcherneva, May 2, 2012
You're right Jenny, it should be the noun. - rac1, May 2, 2012

Si muchas personas están descontentas con su gobierno a veces organizan una protesta si pueden. En muchas países eso es muy peligroso. Es bueno vivir en un país donde podemos hablar con libertad.

If many people are discontented with their government sometimes they organise a protest if they can. In many countries this is very dangerous. It is good to live in a country where we can speak freely.

Ranman, I agree your pictures show terrible things. But there are other countries where worse things happen, and often the world doesn't even hear about them. PS I don't live in the US. - jennysk, May 3, 2012

There are some mistakes in that Spanish translation. I think you could write something like that: "El abogado se puso de pie en medio del juicio y exclamó: 'Protesto'. - silspa, May 2, 2012
I meant "this", not "that", sorry - silspa, May 2, 2012
Oh, yes, I've heard this one so many times in "The practice!":)) ¡Hola, Kdrinning! - Silvia_Tcherneva, May 2, 2012
Yo diría "El abogado se puso de pie a la mitad de la declaración y exclamó "¡Protesto!" " - -cae-, May 2, 2012

It's not just here in the U.S., contrary to popular opinion. The U.S. just seems to be on the front stage. It's sad everywhere when the powers that be have the ability to do what they want. No matter who is in charge. It's sad!! - rac1, May 2, 2012

Yo sé que no te parece justo, ¿pero qué vas a hacer, lanzar una protesta?

I know it doesn't seem fair to you, but what are you going to do, launch a protest?
