I am in a book reading club where the facilitator stated desayunar can be desayunarse but I have never seen it used this way

Hi JM - when you see that 'se' on the end of an infinitive you're right that it's the reflexive pronoun but it just makes the verb 'pronominal' not reflexive as the pronoun can be used in a number of ways.

Reflexive after all means that the person doing the action is also receiving the action.

Me cepillo el pelo. I brush my hair. I'm doing the brushing and having my hair brushed etc. - reflexive

but

Me comí. I ate it all up. Pronominal (not I ate myself/reflexive)

Desayunarse does exist and means 'to have breakfast' and if you use it with a direct object you need the preposition 'con'. But personally I've never heard it in use and I think it is an old form, rarely used in Spain and I'm not even sure about in Latin America as I think desayunar is more common.

Having said that I think it may have a second meaning in LA for 'finding out'.

Well, I hope that little lot has helped rather than confusing you even more as pronominal verbs can be tricky je je. All the best! smile

Yes, it can be used reflexively. Desayunarse means to have breakfast. Me desayuné= I had breakfast.
