Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen!

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. No quisiera ser rudo contigo en presencia de tus amigos.

I really didn't want to be rude to you in front of your friends.

2. Se debe lijar la madera ruda antes de pintarla.

You should sand the rough wood before painting it.

Hola Rac! Hola Cae! Muchas gracias!!! :))))) - iana01, Apr 28, 2012
There seems to be a discrepancy in the word rude as used in English and as used here in 'rudo'. Cae, could you post an answer using 'rudo' in several different ways? - katydew, Apr 28, 2012
Carlos, what do you think? - rac1, Apr 28, 2012

I wonder if 'crude' might be closer to the word's meaning than 'rude' in English? - katydew, Apr 29, 2012

The meaning given to the Spanish word "rudo" changes depending on the object which it describes. If it is a "thing" (mainly a handmade one), a situation (rarely used) or a person. When the word "rudo" or "ruda" is used to describe a person it isn't neccessarily in a pejorative sense but means that such person is not weak or fussy. As example:

  • "Chuck Noris is a rough guy".

In certain context and as long as it's clear in the intention of the expression, "rudo" or "ruda" may mean ignorant, bad-mannered or gross.

Thank you so much, Carlos! This is very important to us!!! - Silvia_Tcherneva, Apr 28, 2012
IN English, cae, it only means that Chuck Norris is badly behaved, impolite. The meaning is never pleasant, never a positive comment.. - annierats, Apr 28, 2012
Thanks for the information, Annie, and thanks to everyone for reading this post. =) - -cae-, Apr 29, 2012
I'm grieved that I had chosen a "fortuneless" word in English. - -cae-, Apr 29, 2012
Thanks, Cae. It seems that this is one word I'll have to study more before using. - katydew, Apr 29, 2012

I do not like rude things or situations. I prefer happy and nice ones.

No me gustan rudas coses o situaciones. Prefiero unas felizes y bunenas.

Corret: "No me gustan las cosas o situaciones rudas, las prefiero divertidas y agradables."

Buenos dios iana, mi amiga:) - Ranman, Apr 28, 2012
Ranman, hola!!!! Gracias!! :))) Buenos días para ti también. :) - iana01, Apr 28, 2012
Cae: También quiero decir que prefiero ser feliz. Puedo decir: "...las prefriero felices y agradables."??? Pienso que la palabra "divertido" significa algo un poquito diferente. - iana01, Apr 28, 2012
Good Iana! - rac1, Apr 28, 2012
She is so gorgeous as your sentence is! ¡Hola, amigita!!!! - Silvia_Tcherneva, Apr 28, 2012
Wow. Me impresionó tu forma de preguntar, Iana, porque efectivamente "felices" y "divertidas" son palabras con acepciones ligeramente distintas. - -cae-, Apr 29, 2012
Es "No me gustaN...". Sorry, my typo. =( - -cae-, Apr 29, 2012
Muchas gracias, Silvy!! :)) - iana01, Apr 29, 2012
Sí, sí podrías decir "felices y agradables" perfectamente. En español yo usaría la palabra "incómoda" (y la uso), porque a mí no me gustan las "situaciones incómodas". - -cae-, Apr 29, 2012
Muchas gracias Cae por la expicación!! :)) - iana01, Apr 29, 2012

  • Ser rudo con alguien que está tratando de ayudar. Eso es lo que detesto.
  • Being rude to someone who is trying to help. That's what I hate.

- -cae-, Apr 29, 2012
